Which do people think is better? I was just wondering because I have both now, but can't seem to get a different tip for the telescopic one. I'm used to the roler tips, but the screw thing on the tip I want is far too big for the cane I've got here. Any ideas? Thanks.
The telescopic canes are what the NFB uses, right? I'm used to the other kind, and I loves my roller tip, but when I go to the Colorado NFB Center next year, I'll be using a telescopic cane. I've seen one before, and they're definitely more lightweight. Furthermore, I hear they're better at detecting cracks in the concrete, with which I've always had trouble, so I'm looking forward to seeing the difference with the telescopic cane.
The telescopic ones are deffinitely lighter, but can't find any other tips for it.
the teliscopics are better
oh and at ccb they'll have you use a strate nfb cane not a teliscopic.
but those types of canes pick up way way more stuf
Does anyone know if there are different tips available, or just the little ceramic ones?
Oh, I thought the NFB canes were telescopic. So what's the difference between the NFB canes and telescopic ones?
NFB is a proponent of using the straight cane that doesn't collapse. In answer to your initial post Harmony, I prefer the folding canes. My own travel style might be part of the problem, in that I'm a fast walker, and have had several of the telescopic canes break or colapse on me. You might check with the source from where you obtained your cane to see about different tips.
Good luck,
Lou
Yes, the NFB does primarily promote the straight cane, which doesn't collapse. that is the kind I use. However, I have used both telescoping and folding canes a lot in the past. Of those two, I much prefer a folding cane. I always had problems getting the telescoping cane to stay open. I'm a fast walker, and if it got caught in the crack of a sidewalk, or if it hit an obstacle too hard, it tended to collapse in on itself, even though I thought I'd have the joints firmly in place. Folding canes don't do that, so I like them better.
I have got a folding cane. But I find it sticks in crcks and things ike. Infact I wol rater have a guide dog.
I think the telescopic one is good, but still been using the folding one most of the time. I know they're heavier, but they fold up or collapse smaller than the telescopic ones.
I'm a fast walker too, so I probably wouldn't do too well with a telescopic cane.
I'm the same way. I have used a telescopic cane, but it kept collapsing in on itslelf. I'm a fast walker as well, and I like the fact that collapsable ones are smaller.
Glad to see that there are so many fast walkers like me in here. LOL. I now have an NFB one-piece and a couple of folding canes. I rotate them. I could never get a telescoping cane to stay open. Is there a knack?
I've never had major problems with my teliscopic collapsing on it self, I think there's just a nack to getting it opened enough
Folding cane for me.
Not sure if I'd ever go the telescoping route. I hear they collapse when they get stuck in cracks. Can someone describe to me what a telescoping cane looks like? If I go the guide dog route I might consider the telescoping cane. Aren't these canes much more smaller when closed up then a folding cane?
First, Lion, a telescoping cane looks kind of like an antenna. If you think of the way an antenna collapses, where the parts fit inside each other, that's how a telescoping cane does it. Second, I don't think there's all that much difference in size between a folding and telescopic cane once they're collapsed. A folding might be a little bit bigger around, but I think a telescoping is a bit longer. So, it's whatever you prefer.
No. I thought the telescopic one would be smaller when it was collapsed, which was partly why I got it, but it kind of isn't. I also walk really fast too.
